An architect power couple's efforts to convert a dilapidated nursery into modern holiday lets are to feature in a television show.
Marc Turnier and his wife Paula Corell were planning the transformation of the large two-storey building and workshop when they were approached by the producers of Great British Home Restoration.
Walking distance from Western Undercliff Beach in Ramsgate, the imposing site was originally a Victorian, regency-style villa.
It was then used as shop and a nursery, before falling into disrepair and standing derelict for almost 20 years.
“This property stood out because of its heritage,” said Mr Turnier, managing director of Arcvelop.
“We wanted to reinstate that villa-style property, to restore the bay windows and put back the original detailing.”
The former nursery has now been turned into five holiday homes of various sizes, while the detached workshop at the rear is being converted into an industrial, modern-style studio which the couple will use themselves.
The couple run their architecture and development company together and specialise in transforming older sites by blending heritage aspects with contemporary design.
They purchased the plot in Southwood Road for £350,000 and spent another £450,000 on the renovations.
Because of trouble getting building materials delivered, the project ended up running a couple of weeks late.
However, it came out exactly on budget and all units have already been rented out.
In competition with local hotels and B&Bs, the average cost of renting out two-bedroom accommodation is between £100 and £150 per night.
“The villas have a rustic look to them, they’ve got exposed plaster walls, soft furnishings, a very homely, beachy sort of style,” said the 32-year-old architect.
“I’m really proud of how the work has gone. I think it represents a positive development scheme in Thanet.
“We want to push the design standards. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune, thoughtful design can really add a lot of value and improve the area,” said the part-time Ramsgate resident.
The newly transformed villa will feature in the upcoming second season of Great British Home Restoration on Channel 4.
