The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has posted plans online for four bridge replacement projects slated in Perry County in 2024.

The projects are currently in the design phase and construction work is expected to take place in the 2024 construction season.

A digital version of the information for all four projects will be available to view online from Aug. 11 to Sept. 10.

The projects, which all address “structural deficiencies,” are:

Route 274 (Shermans Valley Road) bridge over Montour Creek in Spring Township, roughly 5.5 miles west of New Bloomfield.

“The project consists of replacing the 101-year-old reinforced concrete slab bridge, approach pavement, guide rail, drainage, signing, and pavement markings.

The roadway width will be widened to include two 11-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders. The Route 274 bridge is located just east of Elliottsburg near the intersection of Limestone Ridge Road. One lane of traffic will be maintained during construction. Construction will include half-width staging and a temporary traffic signal. Construction duration is anticipated to be 8 months.”

Route 850 (Landisburg Road) bridge over an unnamed tributary to Shermans Creek in Carroll Township.

“The existing bridge will be replaced with a Precast Concrete Box Culvert. To avoid a lengthy detour during construction, a temporary two-lane roadway will be constructed downstream of the existing bridge.

The temporary roadway will connect existing Route 850 to Route 34 intersection. A portion of Dromgold Drive (T-401) will be closed during construction between Route 850 and the Grace Evangelical Christian Church. The church will be accessible from Pisgah State Road during construction.”

Route 34 bridge over Trout Run in Centre Township.

“The existing bridge will be replaced with a two-cell, precast concrete box culvert. To avoid a lengthy detour during construction, a temporary roadway will be constructed. Proposed traffic control measures include the construction of a single-lane temporary roadway upstream of the existing bridge with traffic maintained by a temporary traffic signal.

Once the culvert is installed, traffic will be maintained in a single lane pattern on Route 34 with a temporary traffic signal while the half-width construction of the roadway is completed. Seiders Road will be closed during the use of the temporary traffic signals.”

Route 34 (Carlisle Street) bridge over Dutch Canal in New Bloomfield Borough.

“The existing bridge will be replaced with a cast in place concrete box culvert. The new culvert will be constructed under one side of the roadway while a single lane of traffic will be maintained on the opposite side. A temporary traffic signal will be used to maintain traffic in a single lane during construction.”

Information about the projects and an interactive comment form can be found on the PennDOT District 8 website, under “Public Meetings.” There is a tile for each project.
